The NS Resettlement Society (NSRS) evolved from the outpouring of generosity and compassion that greeted Ukrainians who fled the Russian invasion in February 2022.  Today, we support people who are fleeing war or natural disaster and arrive in Canada under special immigration measures.  

Nova Horizons, our service centre located at 380A Bedford Highway in Halifax, provides a welcoming refuge where families build connections with their cultural and new community and find household furnishings to start their resettlement journey.

NSRS at a Glance:

  • We are a non-profit organization incorporated under the Registry of Joint Stocks as the NS Resettlement Society

  • Nova Horizons is our service centre located at 380A Bedford Highway, Halifax Nova Scotia

  • Nova Horizons is open Tuesdays and Saturdays (10am – 3pm)

  • 580+ displaced families have received support since November 2023

  • 90+ volunteers make it possible; we have no fulltime staff

  • 90% of our volunteers are newcomers who arrived in Canada since 2023

  • Currently, people from 10 countries are eligible; most people we support are from Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan

  • Services include programs, social activities and free household furnishings

  • We distributed over $500,000 worth of donated household items for free since November 2023

  • We rely on grants, donations, fundraising, sales revenues and in-kind services to cover our operational budget. We receive no core funding from government

  • 100% of our budget supports newcomers
